How to Crochet a Basic Striped Sweater (Free Crochet Pattern!)

When I was a beginner crocheter, I found that striped crochet sweaters were a great project for me to start with. The simple, repetitive stitch pattern allowed me to focus on mastering the basic crochet stitches, and the stripes added visual interest without requiring advanced techniques. I enjoyed being able to experiment with different color combinations and create a garment that was unique and personal to me.

Working on a striped crochet sweater also helped me to develop more of my skills in constructing and shaping crochet garments. I learned how to create sleeves, a collar, and a fitted silhouette, and I was able to adapt the pattern to fit my measurements. I found that crochet sweaters, overall, were a fun and rewarding project that helped me to build confidence and improve my crochet skills - and hopefully you will feel the same!

To make an easy striped sweater, you will need the following materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in two colors, approximately 1000 yards of the main color and 500 yards of the contrasting color
  • Size I (5.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Gauge: 16 sc x 18 rows = 4 inches

Size: To fit a women's size medium.

Sweater instructions:

With the main color yarn, ch 66.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (65 sts)

Row 2-3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 4: Change to contrasting color yarn, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 5-6: With contrasting color yarn, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Row 7: Change to main color yarn, ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Repeat rows 4-7 for pattern until piece measures approximately 18 inches from the beginning, or until it reaches the desired length.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

To make the sleeves, join the contrasting color yarn in any st along the edge of the sweater and ch 1. Sc evenly around the armhole, working 3 sc in the corners. Join with a slip st in the first st. Fasten off and weave in ends. Repeat for the other sleeve.

To make the collar, join the main color yarn in any st along the neckline and ch 1. Sc evenly around the neck, working 3 sc in the corners. Join with a slip st in the first st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Congratulations, you have completed your sweater! I hope that you enjoyed creating this project - keep on the lookout for more free crochet patterns that are beginner-friendly in the future. Happy crocheting!
